Frequently Asked Questions

Who can submit a project proposal?

  • Any Rice student, faculty, or staff can submit a proposal. As RESET is an undergraduate blanket tax, priority will be given to projects led by undergraduates. However, we strongly encourage collaboration between faculty, staff, and grad students in project proposal design and implementation.

How do I submit a proposal?

  • Click on the “RESET Proposal Application” page and download the application from the link at the bottom of the page. Submit completed proposals via email to riceRESET@gmail.com.

Can I propose more than one project?

  • Absolutely!

Can I get the Committee’s input before I submit my proposal?

  • Yes – in fact, we recommend it. If you submit your project proposal before the deadline, the committee will look it over and provide suggestions for improvement. Feel free to email us at any time if you need help finding the appropriate contacts on campus for your project.

How much funding could I receive from RESET? What avenues for additional funding are available for projects under RESET?

  • No more than $15,000 of the blanket tax fund will be awarded for any one project. However, the committee will look favorably on project proposals that work to secure matching funds. If a project meets RESET criteria, we will assist groups in seeking matching funds by connecting projects with potential funders (such as the Baker Institute Energy Forum).

What are the criteria for project evaluation?

  1. The following are necessary requirements for every proposal:
    • Proposals shall clearly outline a plan to quantify cost savings and environmental impact.
    • Proposals shall demonstrate the ability of the project to be self‐sustaining.
    • Proposals shall define a metric to measure the success of the project.
    • Proposals shall include a timeline for the implementation of the project.
  2. Proposals with strength in following areas should be given greater consideration:
    • Ability to procure matching or outside funds;
    • Cost‐effectiveness and efficiency;
    • Ability to promote awareness energy sustainability at Rice and in the greater Houston community;
    • Inclusion of an educational component.
What other schools have a program like RESET?

  • Rice is one of over 30 universities to have a student-led sustainability program like RESET. Below are some examples and links to their websites:
